Best First Date Outfits for Women Who Want to Look Elegant Without Overdressing

A woman walks into a neighborhood wine bar on a Thursday in a floor-length satin gown. Her date is in a sweater, and the couple at the next table are in jeans. The gown is beautiful, and it is also the first thing everyone in the room notices about her. Elegance on a first date comes from matching the outfit to the venue and then finishing it with care.

Venue-Based Dress Levels

The safest rule is to dress one step above what the room requires. For a coffee shop, that means dark jeans or tailored trousers with a good knit or a silk blouse. For a cocktail bar, a simple dress or wide-leg trousers with a fitted top is enough. A restaurant with tablecloths and a sommelier calls for a dress or a skirt, and a structured jacket for the walk there. A daytime date outdoors, at a market or a botanical garden, calls for flat shoes and a layer, since these plans involve more walking than either person expects.

Photos of the venue answer most of the question before anything comes out of the closet. Tagged pictures of guests in T-shirts mean a cocktail dress will look out of place, while low lighting and leather chairs in a hotel bar make a hoodie look careless.

Fit and Alterations

An inexpensive dress that fits well looks more expensive than a designer one that pulls across the back or bunches at the waist. Trousers should break lightly on the shoe or end at the ankle. Sleeves should end at the wrist bone, and a blazer should close without straining at the button. Small alterations cost little and change the look of a garment considerably. Taking in a waist or shortening a hem can turn something that hangs on the body into something cut for it. A local tailor can finish this kind of work within a week, so it pays to plan a few days ahead of the date.

Versatile Core Pieces

A small set of garments works for nearly every first date. A midi slip dress in a matte fabric works at a bar or a restaurant and can be dressed down with a fine-gauge sweater over it. A silk or satin blouse with tailored trousers looks finished and still relaxed. Dark, straight-leg jeans with a fitted blazer suit a daytime date or a casual dinner. In winter, a fine merino knit dress with tights and ankle boots looks polished at almost any venue.

Each outfit benefits from one point of interest. That might be a pair of earrings or an unusual neckline, while everything else stays quiet. Several statement pieces worn together look like a costume.

Outfit Choices Across Relationship Types

A friend's introduction usually means a casual bar, where dark jeans and a silk blouse are enough. A reunion with a former classmate over a long lunch is better served by a knit dress and flat boots.

Some women are meeting a coworker for coffee, some are dating a sugar daddy for the first time, and others are seeing someone they met years ago. The outfit still follows the venue and the hour, so a silk blouse and tailored trousers are a safe choice for a quiet dinner in any of those cases.

Color and First Impressions

In a 2006 Princeton study of 245 undergraduates, judgments of faces seen for one tenth of a second closely matched judgments made with no time limit, which suggests that a first impression forms within moments. The match was strongest for trustworthiness. The study measured agreement between quick and slow judgments and did not test their accuracy. Clothing color adds to that early impression. In a 2008 experiment by Andrew Elliot and Daniela Niesta, men rated the same woman as more attractive when she wore a red shirt than when she wore a blue one.

The red effect is less reliable than its fame suggests. The clothing experiment used a small sample of 23 male undergraduates. Later studies produced mixed results, and one found the effect only for faces already rated as attractive. There is little reason to switch to red for a first date when navy or forest green is more flattering, and colors close to her own skin tone and hair color do more for her than any single shade.

Shoes and Comfort

Heel height affects how others behave around a woman. Nicolas Gueguen's study in Archives of Sexual Behavior, released in 2014, compared flats, a 2-inch heel, and a 3.5-inch pump, and found that men were more likely to help the woman in higher heels with a survey request.

A 2013 survey by the College of Podiatry found that high heels cause pain after 1 hour, 6 minutes and 48 seconds of wear for most women, and about 28% of women who wore heels on a night out admitted to walking home barefoot. A first date that includes a walk between a bar and a restaurant can easily run past three hours, so block heels and polished loafers are the better choice for most evenings, and the College's consultant podiatrist, Mike O'Neill, recommended wedges or platforms for women who want the extra height.

Coats and Bags

In colder months, the coat is the first garment a date sees, often for several minutes before it comes off. A wool coat in camel or charcoal that ends at the knee or below covers almost any outfit underneath and looks deliberate on its own. In summer, a light trench or a cropped jacket does the same job. A puffer jacket over a slip dress sends a mixed message that the dress cannot correct once the coat is off. A small structured bag finishes an outfit better than a large tote. It should hold a phone, a card, keys, and a lipstick, and it should sit on the lap or the table without taking up a chair.

Fabric and Final Checks

Wrinkles make a careful outfit look careless. A handheld steamer takes five minutes and removes creases from silk and most blends. Breathable fabrics such as cotton and linen are cooler in a warm restaurant, while a light layer helps in air-conditioned rooms during summer. Before leaving, a full-length look in daylight catches a visible bra strap or a hem that has dropped on one side. Scent should be applied lightly, since a date across a small table will notice too much of it.

The Slip Dress and Loafers

She steams the slip dress and adds the one pair of earrings. Then she puts on the loafers she has already walked a mile in. At the bar, her date stands to greet her, and the first thing he mentions is the place they are about to eat, because nothing about her outfit has asked for comment.
