There's something about fall that makes us want to reset everything.
We swap sandals for boots, iced coffee for something warmer, and suddenly reorganizing a closet feels completely reasonable.
But what about our skincare?
Okay, quick question: when was the last time you changed your skincare routine because the season changed?
You changed your closet. You changed your coffee order. You may have already started thinking about candles, sweaters and everything pumpkin.
Your skin would like a word.
As temperatures cool and humidity begins to drop, our skin is adjusting right along with us. Then we head indoors, turn on the heat, spend long days working, and — of course — continue clocking plenty of time with our phones, laptops and tablets.
Fall is the perfect time to check in with your skin and ask: What does my skin need now?
Maybe It’s Time We Stop Waiting for Something to “Fix”
For years, beauty has largely been corrective. Notice dryness? Find a richer moisturizer. See a fine line? Start thinking about wrinkle cream. Skin looking dull? Suddenly we're exfoliating like there's no tomorrow. Sound familiar?
But one of the most interesting shifts happening in beauty right now is a move toward something I personally love: preventative beauty.
Instead of waiting until our skin looks stressed and then trying to correct it, we're becoming more thoughtful about supporting it before those concerns become the entire focus.
And no, preventative beauty isn't about being afraid of getting older. Aging is part of living — and I'm certainly not interested in giving up laughing, traveling, working, celebrating or any of the other things that might eventually show up on my face.
It's about something much simpler: Support your skin now. Don't just rescue it later.
Fall Is the Perfect Time to Start
Think about what happens when fall arrives. Cooler outdoor temperatures meet warmer, drier indoor environments. Our routines change. We may spend even more time inside. Skin that felt perfectly comfortable all summer can suddenly start feeling a little less...cooperative.
This is when I become particularly conscious of hydration and supporting the skin barrier. And here's one of my favorite fall skincare tips: don't wait until your skin feels dry to start hydrating it. That's preventative beauty in its simplest form.
So what does that actually look like day to day? Here's how it plays out in my own routine.
Okay, So What Does My Fall Routine Actually Look Like?
First up: Rise™ Cleanser. Remember when that squeaky-clean, almost-too-tight feeling somehow convinced us our cleanser was really working? Yeah...we're leaving that behind. I want cleansing to feel like the beginning of caring for my skin, not a battle with it.
Next comes Balance™ Toner. It's one of those steps that's incredibly easy to skip — until it becomes part of your ritual and you wonder why you ever did.
Then comes the product I personally don't like to skip.
Veil™, Meet Modern Life
Laptop open? Check. Phone nearby? Obviously. You've already looked at a screen before finishing your morning coffee? Same. Welcome to modern life.
Veil™ Screen Savior Serum sits at the heart of the Skin & Vine Digital Defense™ philosophy.
I created Skin & Vine after thinking about something surprisingly simple: our lifestyles have changed dramatically, but the way we think about skincare hasn't always evolved along with them.
We work on screens. We socialize through screens. We shop through screens. We relax with screens.
Research surrounding blue and visible light and skin continues to evolve, particularly when we're talking about real-world exposure from digital devices. That's important to acknowledge. But oxidative stress,
environmental exposure, hydration and barrier support are already meaningful parts of the healthy-skin conversation.
So instead of being afraid of technology — and believe me, I'm not; I love it — I became interested in a different question: How can skincare better support the way we actually live today?
That's what Digital Defense™ means to me. It's not about running away from modern life. It's skincare designed to keep up with it.
And Then...Hydrate
This is where Quench™ Moisturizer comes in. Especially in fall, moisturizer isn't something I want to wait to reach for until my skin is waving a little white flag. Hydration and barrier support are part of the everyday ritual.
And while we're here, can we talk about the neck? We spend years meticulously caring for our faces and then somehow stop at the jawline. Your neck knows.
Bring your skincare down. Sculpt™ Neck & Décolleté makes that reminder part of my routine rather than something I suddenly think about years from now. Again: preventative rather than purely corrective.
Quick Recap: Skin & Vine’s Fall Skin Tips & Tricks
If you take nothing else from this, here's the short version:
1. Don't wait for the flakes. Start focusing on hydration before skin begins feeling tight or visibly dry. Think proactive, not catch-up.
2. Layer light to rich. Think of fall skincare like fall clothing: lighter toner/essence and serum first, then moisturizer to help support hydration and the skin barrier.
3. Give your skin — and yourself — a screen break. Turn your evening skincare routine into five screen-free minutes. Put the phone down and let the ritual become your nightly reset.
4. Your face doesn't end at your chin. Bring skincare down your neck and décolleté. They're often forgotten until visible changes become more noticeable.
5. Fall doesn't mean farewell to SPF. Cooler weather doesn't make UV exposure disappear. Keep broad-spectrum sunscreen in your daytime routine year-round.
“My biggest fall skincare tip? Don’t wait for your skin to look stressed before you start supporting it. Preventative beauty is really about the little things we do consistently.”
Maybe the Biggest Fall Beauty Trend Isn’t a Trend at All
We hear about a new must-have ingredient, treatment or 12-step routine practically every week. But the beauty movement I'm most interested in is much less complicated: prevention.
Supporting skin before it looks stressed. Maintaining hydration instead of chasing dryness. Caring about the skin barrier consistently. Recognizing that our environment and our increasingly connected lifestyles belong in the skincare conversation too.
And understanding that healthy-looking skin isn't created by one miraculous night before an event. It's built through the little things we do every day.
So this fall, before you completely overhaul your beauty cabinet, try something simpler. Instead of asking, “What do I need to fix?” ask, “What can I start supporting now?”
Because maybe the biggest shift happening in beauty isn't another ingredient, treatment or trend. Maybe it's simply learning to care for our skin before it starts asking us to.
