Autumn days make us want to spend all our time outdoors: going to apple orchards, navigating corn mazes, and cheering at football games. But, when you're home, you also want to enjoy fresh air and sunshine a few steps from the back door. So how can you upgrade your outdoor living space to make the most of each season?

Think of small upgrades such as butyl tape on your new deck build and bigger ones such as putting in a new driveway with paving stones and a gate. Consider what would be the best investment for your lifestyle. For example, do you like to relax at home or entertain? Do you have small children or pets to consider?

As you begin to ponder outdoor home improvements, consider these elements to elevate each season.

Fall

  • Fire table. Fire tables have become a popular and luxurious addition to decks and patios at home, restaurants, and other outdoor venues. While they can be expensive, they set the space's mood and add warmth on chilly nights. Homeowners often buy fire tables, but it is possible to DIY a table. This intermediate project does require some handy skills in multiple areas: woodworking, masonry, metalwork, and mechanical.

  • Firepit. While a fire table is a rather posh addition, a fire pit is a more practical and inexpensive way to add warmth to your entertaining space. Think about s'mores and popcorn while watching an outdoor movie. Here again, you might purchase a manufactured fire pit or make your own. If you install a fire pit nearby your home, be sure to keep it a safe distance from any combustible materials. If you put it on a deck or patio, use a fireproof mat to protect the area beneath it.

  • Driveway. While it may be more costly to pave your driveway with asphalt or concrete, you'll be able to forego the constant need to replace gravel and make snow removal easier. Create a more opulent entrance with stone pavers and a gate. If you're not sure which material is best for your outdoor space, you may consult a San Diego driveway pavers company.

Winter

  • Patio heater. In 2020, patio heaters were a bit like toilet paper. With so many restaurants moving to outdoor seating, these heating elements were in short supply. Now that they are more available consider the heat type you'd prefer: propane, electric, or natural gas. Choose a heater that fits your space and aesthetic. This element will keep your deck or patio cozier when you want to watch the winter sky or enjoy a soak in the hot tub.

  • Garden shed. A garden shed will not only protect your outdoor furnishings and accessories through the season but also makes for a helpful spot to stow shovels and sleds. Put away outdoor cushions and other fabrics to help them last longer.

  • Front door. Upgrading your front door for winter can save in energy costs if your current door is leaking air and improve the overall curb appeal of your home. If your existing door is functioning well, you can easily make it look new with a fresh coat of paint. Consider a pop of color to greet guests or stay with a traditional stain.

Spring

  • Deck. A deck offers flexible space that can add value to your home. Use it for relaxing, entertaining, family time, or eating al fresco. If you have a two-story deck, consider adding an under-deck drainage system that allows you to transform the space under the deck into a children's play space, sunroom, outdoor entertainment room, or storage. Choose an outdoor living option to fit your personality and lifestyle. According to Remodeling Magazine, the return on investment is outstanding: The average wooden deck addition recoups 65% of its value and a composite deck about 63%.

  • Furnishings. Spring provides a great time to upgrade your outdoor furnishings. Usually, stores have the most options so that you can choose the most comfortable and beautiful seating for your home. Whenever possible, try out the furniture before buying.

  • Landscaping. You don't have to have a green thumb to improve your lawn and garden. If you want to redo your home's landscape completely, enlist the help of a landscape architect. However, a trip to your local garden center and talking with their professionals can also guide you in plant choices. Consider sun and shade and your plant hardiness zone when purchasing plants and seeds.

Summer

  • Swimming pool. Swimming pools rank low on ROI but high on fun! If you live in a warmer climate, you can use the pool virtually year-round. Consider the costs and maintenance before taking the plunge, but then enjoy your lovely backyard upgrade with your family and friends.

  • Vegetable garden. In 2020, interest in gardening skyrocketed, and many people found a new hobby. If you were among the new devotees, take time to build raised beds and browse through seed catalogs. Gardening is not only relaxing but yields healthy results.

  • Lighting. Lighting can accentuate your home, pool, or deck, while also making these spaces safer. Whether you add solar lights along the path to your front door, wired lampposts or light fixtures or simply string up some Edison bulbs over your deck, choose options that fit your lifestyle and complement your home.

Outdoor upgrades not only make your home more inviting but may also help you get more money when you sell your home. According to Trulia, more than 30% of Americans say they would like to live in a larger home. Creating beautiful outdoor spaces is a cost-effective way to double your living space and make your home more attractive to buyers.
