Backed by prestigious educational and fellowship experience, Dr. Daniel Maman has been named to the New York Times Best Doctors and Super Doctors in Plastic Surgery lists. Within his practice, he prides himself on a second-to-none, custom patient experience that prioritizes education, comfort, and concierge care.

I interviewed Dr. Maman to get expert info on the latest in cosmetic surgery.

Posh Lifestyle & Beauty Blog: What are the most exciting advancements in cosmetic surgery that you've seen in recent years?

Dr. Maman: Advances in surgical techniques and perioperative care have contributed to improved safety and better outcomes in cosmetic breast surgery. Surgeons prioritize patient safety thorough preoperative evaluations, meticulous surgical techniques, and postoperative monitoring. These are elements that my practice prioritizes for every patient.

Posh Lifestyle & Beauty Blog: Are there any new procedures or techniques that you're particularly enthusiastic about offering to your patients? Why?

Dr. Maman: I commonly recommend combination procedures that address multiple concerns simultaneously, such as combining breast augmentation/lift/reduction with abdominoplasty or liposuction. This approach can optimize results and reduce overall recovery time. Many of my patients are active mothers who prefer not to have multiple periods of recovery but will benefit from rejuvenation of both the breasts and body.

Posh Lifestyle & Beauty Blog: How is technology impacting the field of cosmetic surgery? Are there any specific innovations that you see changing the landscape significantly?

Dr. Maman: Many plastic surgeons now use advanced 3D imaging and simulation technologies to help patients visualize potential outcomes before undergoing surgery. This technology is still limited in its ability to provide realistic expectations for surgeries that have many variables the computer is not able to consider. It is still something to keep a close eye on as artificial intelligence becomes more common and prevalent in all industries, including plastic surgery and aesthetics.

Posh Lifestyle & Beauty Blog: With the rise of non-invasive and minimally invasive procedures, have you seen a shift in patient preferences? If so, how are you adapting your practice to meet these changing needs?

Dr. Maman: My practice is currently limited to only aesthetic surgery. I do not take new patients for things like injectables and skin rejuvenation. I refer my patients to dermatologists if surgery is not a good solution for their concern. As my practice has gotten busier over the years, this allows me to still provide my surgery patients with high-touch care.

Posh Lifestyle & Beauty Blog: What are some common misconceptions about cosmetic surgery that you encounter? How do you address these concerns with your patients?

Dr. Maman: Cosmetic surgery results are not always obvious. This misconception stems from media portrayals of extreme or poorly executed procedures. Skilled plastic surgeons aim to achieve natural-looking results that harmonize with a patient's unique features. With advancements in techniques, many procedures yield subtle enhancements that are difficult to detect. This is the cornerstone of “good” cosmetic surgery. It is important to have honest, realistic conversations with patients about what can and cannot be achieved through surgery. If they are seeking something unrealistic or not in line with my own aesthetic viewpoint, I choose not to operate.

Posh Lifestyle & Beauty Blog: Looking ahead, what are some trends or developments in cosmetic surgery that you believe will be most impactful in the coming years?

Dr. Maman: There is a growing recognition of the interconnectedness between physical appearance, mental well-being, and overall health. There is a current trend towards a more holistic approach to beauty, with an emphasis on nutrition, skincare, wellness practices, and mental health alongside traditional cosmetic procedures. More integrative approaches that address both internal and external factors affecting appearance are likely to gain further traction.

Posh Lifestyle & Beauty Blog: You prioritize a "second-to-none, custom patient experience." Can you elaborate on what that means to you and how you achieve it in your practice?

Dr. Maman: When thinking about positive experiences, my practice often references checking in at a 5-star hotel. This has unofficially become the basis for how we create an exceptional welcome to our patients in the office. We pay attention to everything – sounds, smells, lighting, and customize our care to each patient. Outside of being safe and providing patients with good results, no detail is left unattended from the point of initial contact to post-operative care.

Posh Lifestyle & Beauty Blog: How do you ensure that your patients feel educated, comfortable, and well-supported throughout their entire surgical journey?

Dr. Maman: All my patients have direct access to the registered nurse in my office by phone, email, and text message. Instead of feeling burdened with trying to remember every detail of information associated with their care, they will often simply text. This is a perfect way to ensure consistent education and support for all my patients having surgery.

Posh Lifestyle & Beauty Blog: What role does ethical and responsible patient care play in your practice?

Dr. Maman: Plastic surgeons have a responsibility to avoid exploiting vulnerable patients or engaging in practices that prioritize financial gain over patient well-being. This includes refraining from performing unnecessary procedures, offering unrealistic promises, or pressuring patients into treatment they do not want or need. I firmly stand by this.

Posh Lifestyle & Beauty Blog: Can you share an example of a time when you went above and beyond to ensure a positive patient experience?

Dr. Maman: All my surgery patients are required to stay in a hotel near my office. This way I can see them first thing in the morning on the day after surgery. This small act not only enhances patient safety but also adds to the high-touch patient experience my practice strives for.

Posh Lifestyle & Beauty Blog: What advice would you give someone considering cosmetic surgery for the first time?

Dr. Maman: Always consult with a plastic surgeon who is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and can show you many examples of their work using medical grade before/after photography (same lighting, angles, proportions).

Posh Lifestyle & Beauty Blog: What are the most important considerations for choosing a qualified and ethical plastic surgeon?

Dr. Maman: As mentioned, you should always consult with a plastic surgeon who is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Additional credentials to consider are being a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and fellowship training within a specific area. I have completed a fellowship training at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard in aesthetic and reconstructive breast surgery, for example.
