Butter Coffee, Keto & Intermittent Fasting

Butter or Bulletproof coffee has been a favorite among those that practice the ketogenic diet. In brief, the Keto diet goes by the notion that the body, that usually turns carbohydrates to energy, will start burning fat from the fat cells to produce energy when not enough carbohydrates are available. This happens in a process called ketosis because the body starts producing ketones.

There are benefits to this in terms of weight loss, hunger reduction, and energy boost. Studies show that it can improve cognition and memory, and even contribute to a longer lifespan. This makes sense because neurotransmitters in the brain are created out of fatty acids, and generally, our brain is 60% fat. There are also other reasons for fat intake.

It is then evident why butter coffee, that contains no carbs and is full of beneficial fat fits into the keto diet. Also, if you’re intermittent fasting, you can rely on this drink since there are no carbs or protein which would break the autophagy or the state of ketosis.

Health Benefits of Coffee

Although we need further research on coffee, because it is a very complex beverage, there are still tons of papers on it and good evidence that coffee provides us with a wide range of benefits. A moderate consumption shows an increase in longevity, reduction in risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, liver disease, several types of cancer, and Parkinson’s.

As for the previously mentioned diets, coffee can help promote ketone production. Also, it has a good impact on autophagy, the anti-aging process.

Grass-Fed Butter & MCT Oil

Contrary to long-held popular belief that butter is harmful, fat in butter is not just a source of energy, but also adds to the mentioned health benefits to brain and cognitive function, as well as being the source of vitamins K2, A, and E. Especially if grass-fed, it is a better source of Omega 3s.

MCT Oils, being the medium-chain triglycerides, get absorbed quicker than longer chains. This means they are turned into energy more quickly and efficiently, while also promoting ketone production. Depending on their length they are classified as C12, C10, C8 or C6. However, C6 will be the quickest to get absorbed, but C8 is preferred for being easier on the stomach and better-smelling.

Benefits of Butter Coffee

Butter coffee is a compound of the three. It is prepared with a cup of freshly ground and home-brewed coffee, a tablespoon of MCT oil and 1-2 teaspoons of grass-fed butter, all stirred and well blended together.

Even though it is not a substitute for breakfast, this blend is supposed to give you a better energy boost than pure coffee in the morning, prevent caffeine and sugar crashes during the day and promote weight loss.

Spice it Up

Here are some of the butter coffee recipe ideas to spice up your cup:

  • Pumpkin spice bulletproof

  • Gingerbread

  • Cocoa

  • Green tea

  • Vegan

  • Chai Latte

If you enjoy creamy coffee, butter coffee can be in itself a solution, but you can also try a low carb coffee creamer for your keto-friendly cream coffee.

There is also an instant solution for those in a hurry. Grass Fed Coffee is a ready-to-drink, non-GMO no sugar beverage made out of grass-fed butter, coconut MCT oil and cold brew coffee that is lower in acidity, which will make the coffee easy on your stomach.
