10 Tips To Achieve Perfect Hair Color At Home

1. Have An Extra Box On Hand

Whether you have short and thick hair, or long hair past your shoulders, make sure you have enough hair dye. It's recommended that you have two boxes on hand to help you finish your makeover.

2. Check For Allergies

A patch test on your inner arm is the only way you can check for potential allergies to the ingredients in the hair dye. Always perform one when using a new hair product!

3. Perform A Strand Test

You can never guess how your current gloss hair color will react to the new dye you will use. A strand test will ensure that the results are desirable and look good with your hair. This prevents making the irreversible mistake of dyeing your hair the wrong color!

4. Keep Your Hairline Dye-Free

Vaseline along your hairline is a great way to ensure you don't end up dyeing the skin around your hairline. Unfortunately, getting dye on your skin will mean days of waiting for it to wash off naturally.

5. Detangle Your Hair

Use a detangler brush and make sure your hair is silky smooth before using the hair dye. Any knots can prevent you from achieving the desired results.

6. Part Your Hair Into Sections

For a professional finish, part your hair into four sections. Always down the middle, and side to side across your crown. Secure it to your head using clips. Professionals will always start with the front sections as any mistakes are most visible there.

7. Ditch The Bottle

Most at-home hair coloring kits tell you to apply the color using the bottle, but don't! For a salon finish, you will need a mixing bowl and an applicator brush.

8. A Toothbrush For Highlights

You can naturally apply sunkissed highlights to your hair using a mascara applicator wand or a toothbrush. Just dab the hair dye onto sections of your hair that would normally see the most sun bleaching.

9. Focus On Roots

Your roots require the most developing time, so when you dye your hair a new color, make sure to apply the dye to your roots first on top of your head.

10. Use Proper Hair Washing Techniques

When your hair is first dyed, avoid using shampoo and simply rinse out the color. Afterwards, ensure that you're only using sulfate-free shampoo as not doing so can cause damage to your hair shaft and cause the color to quickly fade. Plus, shampoo without sulfates is less damaging to the health of your hair.
