Exfoliate Your Lips

Exfoliate your lips with a natural homemade exfoliation treatment

When we’re exfoliating we tend to neglect our lips, but here’s why it’s necessary:  Lips tend to lose their volume with aging and sun exposure taking on a thinner look. Exfoliating the dead layers will allow moisturizers and products to penetrate more deeply and have a greater effect. Banish dry, chapped lips this fall by exfoliating them on a regular basis.

It’s really very simple to make your own lip exfoliator. While I’ve purchased lip exfoliators, it’s just as easy to make them at home with items from your pantry. This easy lip exfoliation treatment is courtesy of Susan M. Stuart, M.D., board certified dermatologist and founder and medical director of La Jolla Dermatology and Medical Spa in San Diego, CA.

DIY Lip Exfoliation Treatment and Recipe

1. Measure equal parts abrasive and carrier, such as 1 teaspoon granulated sugar and 1 teaspoon olive oil, into a small bowl or container.

2. Drop in a few drops of your favorite essential oil or citrus juice, which are exfoliants and antiseptics, if desired. Stir until mixed well.

3. Apply a small amount of the exfoliator to clean, dry lips. Scrub with your forefinger all over lips in a circular motion. The sugar will loosen and remove dry skin while the oil or honey will moisturize your lips.

4. Wipe away the remaining exfoliator with a damp, clean washcloth. Apply your favorite lip balm to lock in the moisture.
