Transitioning your home from the bright colors of summer to the warm tones of fall does not have to be stressful. We’ve heard before from Liz Toombs, C.I.D.; this time she is talking about transitioning your home for fall. Liz has two companies, Polka Dots & Rosebuds Interiors, and the DIY service, Out of the Box Room Design, so she knows how to freshen up interiors without spending a bundle. 

Here are Toombs’ tips to welcome fall:

Tip 1: Don’t be afraid of Orange

“Orange does not have to scream ‘Halloween’. As the daylight hours grow shorter, a lot of people like to brighten up their homes. Orange is a perfect pop of color on pillows, throws, bedding and accessories.”

Tip 2: Warm up those pillows

“Chenille and wool are welcoming fabrics for cooler temps. Look for pillows or covers in those fabrics or make them yourself. And, if you want to follow design trends, pillows are an inexpensive way to do so.” 

Tip 3: Group your artwork

“Pictures and artwork are so much more impactful when clustered together on one wall versus spread out individually on every wall. You can even use groupings to hide unsightly elements like a thermostat in the middle of the wall.”

Tip 4: Avoid matchy-matchy

“The shabby chic look of mixed finishes is in and it’s simple to create. You can rough-up furniture and/or use chalk paint to create a distressed finish. When you have the same finishes, a room can look forced.” 

Tip 5: Perk up those pumpkins

“Few items symbolize fall more than pumpkins, but that doesn’t mean you have to go the traditional route. Pumpkins can be updated to blend in with your décor; consider painting old ones or adding glitter. When displaying, pumpkins have more impact when grouped in two to three areas instead of being spread around a room.”
