Summer Sipping Time with Stylish South American Wines

End of summer wines from Montes and Kaiken wineries
By Carla Snuggs

Summer is well under way, but there is plenty of summer sipping left to do, especially with Labor Day right around the corner. Envision a summer in South America. The grills are out every weekend for anticipated asados. Mountains and seashores surround you. Outdoor activities abound: fly-fishing, horseriding, trekking, rock-climbing, mountain biking, whitewater rafting, skiing, ice climbing, and more.

In the cities, the culinary scene is vibrant - influenced by the rich local resources, utilizing hyper seasonal ingredients, they are creatively returning to the roots of their native cuisine. Wineries such as Montes and Kaiken - led by father and son winemaking team Aurelio Montes Sr. and Aurelio Montes Jr. -are increasing their focus on environmental efforts, furthering dry farming programs, preserving reservoirs, and digging deeper into Biodynamic viticulture.

Explore two of their delicious summer-worthy wines:

The NEW 2016 Kaiken Sauvignon Blanc

2016 Kaiken Sauvignon Blanc hails from hand-picked grapes in the Gualtallary-Tupungato region, the northernmost sub-region of the Uco Valley in Mendoza at the foot of the Mount Tupungato volcano. It entices with its rich elegant citrus and herb aromas; and bright, refreshing body that lifts the spirits. Enjoy with warm weather dishes such as avocado-cucumber gazpacho, grilled summer squash or humitas.

2016 Montes Cherub

2016 Montes Cherub from hand-picked grapes on the Montes “El Arcangel” estate in the Marchique Valley, is a blend of 83% Syrah and 17% Grenache. This wine is a bit more subtle than earlier versions, ensuring a fresh, lively wine with notes of bright red fruits with a hint of spice. The easy twist off cap makes is a perfect wine for outdoor picnics. Sip it alone, or alongside fresh ceviche, a decadent lobster roll, or a fresh shrimp salad.

Both are perfect for end of summer sipping! Learn more: Kaiken Premium Wines and Montes Wines
