Maria Sharapova Launches Project Black Dot - Skin Cancer Awareness Platform

Learn about the new skin cancer advocacy platform that raises skin cancer awareness
By Carla Snuggs

Beauties, I wanted to let you know about Project Black Dot, the new advocacy platform that aims to raise year-round skin cancer awareness and call attention to current United States regulations on sunscreen use in schools founded by Maria Sharapova and Holly Thaggard.

The facts are about sunscreens in schools are staggering:

  • Approximately 40 million kids in the U.S. go to school unprotected from the sun, leaving children 3x more exposed to harmful rays than adults year round
  • Due to current FDA regulations classifying sunscreen as an over the counter drug (OTC), 47/50 states in the US restrict children from carrying & applying sunscreen at school

 Did you know:

  • Skin cancer is the most prevalent of all cancers, but one of the most easily preventable
  • 1 in 5 Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer in their lifetime
  • 90% of signs of aging are caused by daily UV exposure

Started by UV protection expert Holly Thaggard and championed by Maria Sharapova, ProjectBlackDot.org’s aim is to put the power back into the hands of parents and schools by providing a simple, downloadable permission slip through the site which parents can sign, to allow their children to carry & apply sunscreen at school.
