Hair Styling: What Is Balayage?

Are you looking for a light, summery style this season? If so, then balayage could be the answer.

If you are seeking that breezy, surfer girl look then you need to know about this amazing style. Read on as we answer the question "What is balayage?"

What is Balayage?

Many people believe balayage to be a specific color that applied to the hair. However, it is actually the application itself as opposed to the color. This means you can get both a blonde balayage and brunette balayage.

This application is characterized by very specific highlights. Blended at the roots, it stays light around the face. The ends are also lightened to give a fresh, summer-like appearance to the hair.

How Is It Done?

Balayage highlights use a painting process, as opposed to traditional dyeing hair methods of using foil. The colorist has more control and artistic freedom, creating a much more natural look. It creates a very soft gradient.

The colorist will use a soft, sweeping motion. Soft cotton or saran is used as a brush, swept in a vertical motion. This avoids spotting and color bleed.

Some areas will be deliberately left out. This is to achieve a blended look. The rest of the highlighted areas is chosen by the colorist, depending on the condition and previous color of the hair itself.

The Consultation

The first step is a consultation with a colorist. They will perform an evaluation of your hair, mainly to discuss your goals and desired outcome. They may also ask questions based on how often you want to have touch-ups and what you currently do with your hair, including styling and applications.

You may find that at this point, the colorist recommends a different technique such as foil applications. They will most likely know what is best for your hair and appearance. If they recommend another to get the desired look, then you should follow their advice.

Balayage Hair Process

After the consultation and evaluation, the colorist will begin dividing your hair into sections. They will start to mix up some lightener to begin and you can expect to be in the chair for around two hours. They will then work a section at a time, painting your hair into the desired shade.

Once done, you will need to sit under a hairdryer. This brings out the lightener and speeds up the process, and could take between 15 to 45 minutes.

The hair will then have a rinse and treatment. Toner is optional, to give a shiny, glossy finish to the hair. The desired trimming, styling, and blow-drying then achieve the desired finish.

Discuss with a Stylist

The best person to answer the question "What is balayage?" is a stylist. Look for specialists in the local area and book a quick drop-in. They can talk about the appearance and if it will be right for you.
