Home Haircut Tips If Your Hair Salon Is Closed

Hair salons being closed is something that a lot of us have had to deal with more regularly these days, since the coronavirus outbreak in early 2020. Although there are bigger fish to fry in the grander scheme of things, it can be frustrating having long locks that you just don’t know what to do with.

However, don’t despair, because we can all get through this. In the following post, we are going to discuss some of the easiest and best ways to deal with your hair and give yourself haircuts and hairstyles at home when you are unable to see your favourite stylist at their hair salon Winnipeg - based or otherwise.

Colouring Your Hair

We have all been there when we just want to grab that easy to use boxed hair dye from the local superstore or somewhere similar. However, one reason why you should seriously consider avoiding those kinds of products is that they have a high percentage of ammonia that will dry your hair out and break and damage it.

It is much better to use temporary hair colour powder. The best way to use them is to style your hair accordingly and then take the temporary powder and apply it to the graying areas or the bits you want to colour.

When choosing a colour, it is advised you choose one that is at least one shade lighter than your natural colour.

Choosing the Best Brushes

The brush you use can make all the difference to your haircuts and hairstyling. Ideally, if you want to take this seriously, you should look for good quality brushes that have either titanium or hardwood handles and boar bristles.

Here are some suggestions for the types of brushes you should use depending on your hair length and type:

  • Curly and tangle-prone hair is easier to manage with a wet hairbrush or wide-toothed comb

  • Hair that is short-to-medium in length is best worked at with a vent hairbrush

  • Long hair is handled best with a paddle-style hairbrush

  • You can add volume to any hairstyle using a round-shaped hairbrush

Working with Bangs

One of the best DIY haircuts and hairstyles you can perform at home is undoubtedly the bang trim. To do this you need to take a section of hair about an inch-wide between your fingers and then pull it in the opposite direction to your face and then use scissors to trim it following along underneath the sides of your fingers.

However, some professionals will argue that you should avoid any hair cutting unless you have experience. It may be more difficult for your stylist, for instance, to correct a bad cut, than it would be for you to come up with an alternative styling or makeshift coverup. For example, you can clip hair that is getting too long into a messy bun or do the old trick of pony tailing it.

Or, simply rock your favourite hat or hairband.

Moisturize Your Hair

What your hair needs to survive for longer is hydration. If you suffer from dry hair, invest in a high-quality conditioner, and apply it generously to your hair. Then wear a shower cap for at least half an hour. You can reduce the amount of time you need to wait for the conditioner to do its thing, by covering the shower cap with a hot towel.

Then when you are ready to, get in the shower or stick your hair under the tap or whatever you plan on doing and rinse it off. You should also consider investing in a good quality nourishing oil to massage your hair and scalp with. Every little helps.
