How to Color Your Hair Extensions

Once you have picked out your hair extensions company, remember this tip, it is always easier and less damaging to the hair extensions to color them from lighter to darker, than from darker to lighter (especially Remy European Human Hair, as most clip in/tape/fusion hair extensions have already been through a chemical process, we advise you NOT to color your hair extensions lighter or bleach them. If you want to lighten your hair extensions, use a toner. A toner will bring out the natural hair color and add ‘tones’ to your hair extensions). Virgin hair extensions (hair extensions that has never been colored) can be bleached and colored lighter and darker.

Often we suggest the novice person obtain a color wheel so that you can get the perfect hair color that will blend seamlessly with your own natural hair, adding natural looking highlights without coloring the hair extensions yourself. Or find a colorist that knows how to color hair extensions. These are the 2 safest ways to obtain colored hair extensions. But if you are determined to color them yourselves, here are some helpful tips:

1. Hair extensions are drier than your own natural hair, so we suggest a cream based dye that’s no more than 20 volume peroxide.

2. ALWAYS perform a strand test before coloring your complete set of hair extensions. 

3. Make sure that you have combed your extensions prior to coloring. Also don’t color your hair extensions if they are wet or damp.

Everyone wants the Ombre look. There’s a secret to how to color hair extensions ombre and that is to color the top halves of the wefts to match the rest of your natural hair (this is because hair extensions can only be dyed one or two shades darker). So the set of hair extensions that you choose should be the color ombre that you want on the bottom. You will need the following to color your hair extensions:

Small mixing bowl
A tint brush
Hair dye kit
Shampoo
Leave-in conditioner
Gloves, towels
Tin foil

4. As soon as you have all the necessary tools in place you can start coloring your hair extensions ombre.

5. Follow the directions on the kit that you purchased.

Tips:

1.  Apply an ample amount of color to completely saturate each section of your hair extensions.
2. Make sure that you color both sides of your extensions When coloring always apply from your starting point downwards, following the natural fall of the hair. If you apply the color upside down/upward brushing, this could damage your extensions and may leave your extensions frizzy or disheveled. 

3. Color should process anywhere from 20 to 40 minutes. You may want to check a small section every 5 to 10 minutes, by gently rubbing the color off the extension with a paper towel, but make sure to reapply the color with your color brush after checking, (hair color when wet appears darker than dry hair color).

4. Use cool low pressure water to completely rinse (15-20 minutes) the color from your extensions. You must allow the water to flow in the direction that the hair naturally falls, from the clipped/wefted portion of the extension to the ends. Thoroughly rinse each section and lightly shampooed with a mild, sulfate free, deep moisturizing or color safe shampoo. All color must be removed from your hair extensions.

5. After proper rinsing and shampooing, apply a leave-in conditioner to each section of your extensions and comb with your paddle brush. Lay the extensions out and allow them to air-dry thoroughly before using them.
